The north shore has pounding waves if thats what you want to see, and during the winter these waves can get as high as 30-40 feet which is perfect for surfing. I would not recommend you doing this as a beginner, and if you were wanting to have a surf vacation it would be best to start at Waikiki beach and get a hotel or a vacation rental there. You will be a lot safer in the water and it is more shallow there.
